This dynamic, historic city serves as the capital of Curacao, a Dutch Caribbean island. The Dutch West India Trading Company established Willemstad in 1634. It became a diversified city over time, with a population representing Dutch, African, Jewish, and Spanish cultures.

1. QUEEN EMMA BRIDGE
The Queen Emma Bridge, often known as the “Swinging Old Lady,” is a popular tourist attraction in Willemstad, Curacao. It joins the ancient neighborhoods of Punda and Otrobanda by spanning the Sint Anna Bay. Its central location makes it the ideal starting point for exploring Willemstad! The bridge provides a scenic walk across the harbour for both locals and tourists. Also, try to go at night, when the arches along the bridge glow like a rainbow. You’ll hear warning bells when it’s set to open for crossing vessels. When the crossing is empty, the crossing gates are locked, and the bridge may be seen in use! It’s fascinating to see because we’ve never seen something like it!
2. MURALS IN OTRABANDA
It has the best museums, stylish restaurants, Dutch colonial architecture, and historical landmarks. But where did Willemstad’s murals come from? They are part of a movement established by Kaya Kaya, a festival conducted in September to promote Otrobanda’s beauty. Every year, due to Kaya Kaya, new murals are added to the neighbourhood, and the more colourful, the better! Follow Queen Emma Bridge to Frederikstraat, where you’ll find a visual feast. Then walk around the neighbourhood! Take the Willemstraat or Belvederestraat exit. Hendricksteeg is across the street, a dead end with many amazing pieces you won’t want to miss.
3. GOUVERNEUR DE ROUVILLE
One of our favourite things to do in Willemstad was to eat at Restaurant & Cafe Gouverneur De Rouville, also known as “De Gouverneur.” You’ll enjoy an international menu with a Caribbean twist, featuring local delicacies! De Gouverneur serves regional dishes such as Keshi Yena and banana soup. It was by far one of our favourite restaurants from our vacation and one of the nicest meals we had in Curacao! Patios, exquisite dining rooms, outdoor terraces, and other amenities are available. It’s ideal for both a sunny breakfast alone and a romantic dinner.
4. TUK TUK TOUR OF WILLEMSTAD

5. SHOP AROUND PUNDA
Punda is a historic neighbourhood in Willemstad’s old town that offers good shopping. There are many boutiques, art galleries, marketplaces, and gift shops in the area. You are aware of both local and worldwide brands. While there are shops on every street in Punda, there are a handful that stand out. The Floating Market is without a doubt the most interesting stop in Punda! It’s close to the Queen Wilhelmina Bridge. Venezuelan merchants use this port to sell fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood. Visit Marshe Nobo for souvenirs and one-of-a-kind Curacaoan items.
