Properly Sizing SCARPA Boots

SCARPA produces performance footwear including but not limited to ski boots, hiking boots, climbing shoes, and even running shoes.
But a SCARPA boot, like any footwear, is only as good as its fit. No matter the quality and technology of the boot, a poor fit is a recipe for discomfort or even injury.
Here’s what you should know about sizing.
Sizing Notes/Chart Reference
First things first, SCARPA uses European sizing on all footwear except their ski boots, in which 1 European whole size is equal to 6.6mm or .26”.
This allows for a more precise fit for your intended use, which is critical in specialty boots and shoes.
Moreover, finding the proper size and fit is critical not only to comfort but to prevent injuries. Improper fit can also cause (or exacerbate) the formation of hot spots and blisters (or worse).
Initial Fitting
One of the most important things to remember when looking for a new pair of SCARPA boots is that there are things you can do to improve the fit of a boot that is slightly too large but nothing you can do to fix the issue of a boot that is too small.
Keep in mind, particularly, that length is critical. If the boot is too short, it will chafe your toes and can cause injury.
Also, keep the end use of the boot in mind. If you’re intending to wear the boots backpacking, bring a loaded pack with you to try the boots out. Your foot will flex and load differently when you’re carrying a pack than when you’re walking, which will influence how the boot supports you.
Some shops may also offer incline boards that will simulate a slope. Test the boots out going “up” and “down” to ensure they support you properly whether you are ascending or descending. Of particular importance is that your foot isn’t pressed into the front of the boot when you are on a decline.
All in all, if you are in doubt about sizing, get a boot that is slightly larger. Good socks and proper lacing can help ensure a better fit from a boot that is slightly too large.
Wear the Right Socks
If you get a pair of SCARPA boots that are just a little bit bigger than your normal size, wearing the right socks can help improve comfort.
Good socks should have a tight and smooth knit with a good shape and fit. A bit of stretch is a benefit, too. Also, consider socks made with wicking materials that will help keep your feet dry.
Adjusting with the volume produced by socks is another good way to ensure a good fit from a pair of SCARPA boots. Experiment with different pairs of socks to achieve a good fit. In extreme cold temperatures, you can even wear two pairs (a liner and an outer sock) but remember, if you need more than two, the boot is too big.
A Note on Lacing
Proper lacing is also critical to ensuring the right level of comfort and support. It will help prevent your foot from slipping in the boot, too, which will cause discomfort and blisters.
Remember to gradually tighten the tension in your laces as you work from the toe up and use lace locks if you find you need to create a different tension between the top of your foot and around your ankle.
