Edwards warns challenger Covington after UFC 296 weigh-ins

UFC welterweight (77.1 kilograms) title contender Lyons Edwards (32, Great Britain) warned challenger Colby Covington (35, United States) “you’re dead tomorrow” after the weigh-ins.
Edwards and Covington both made weight at the UFC 296: Edwards vs. Covington weigh-ins on Nov. 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Edwards weighed in at 170 pounds (77.1 kg) and Covington weighed in at 169.5 pounds (76.9 kg). The pair will meet for the welterweight title in the main event of “UFC 296: Edwards vs. Covington” on Nov. 17 at the same venue.
After the weigh-ins, things got heated. As Edwards stepped off the scale, he made a beeline for Covington, only to be hastily interrupted by UFC CEO Dana White (54, USA). Covington had mentioned Edwards’ late father.
At a press conference the day before, Covington had said, “I’m going to take you to the seventh level of hell. Let’s go down there and say hello to your father,” Covington had taunted Edwards at a press conference the day before. Edwards promptly threw a soda bottle at Covington and lunged at him before safety personnel restrained him.
“I’m going to settle this tomorrow for everything you said to my father,” Edwards said after the weigh-ins, adding, “You’re dead tomorrow.”
Covington shouted to the crowd that this was America’s “Revolutionary War” against Britain and vowed to win “for the American people.”
The fight is expected to be close. Edwards, who was crowned welterweight champion last August after defeating Kamaru Usman (36, Nigeria/USA), is unbeaten in 12 consecutive bouts (11 wins, 1 loss). The former interim welterweight champion has the second-most takedowns (67) and fifth-most strikes (1863) in UFC history.
The UFC flyweight (56.7 kg) title contenders for the co-main event also made weight. Champion Alessandri Pantoja (33, Brazil) made exactly the limit. Challenger Brandon Roybal (31, USA), looking to avenge his loss two years ago, tipped the scales at 56.5 kg (124.5 lbs).
“I’m going to bring the belt back to the U.S.,” Roybal vowed after the weigh-ins. Roybal has 토토사이트 won three straight since his loss to Pantoja to earn a title shot.
This will be the first defense for Pantoja, who was crowned flyweight champion in July after defeating Brandon Moreno (30, Mexico) via split decision. The champion promised a “do or die” matchup.
