For the first time as an independent nation, India is hosting the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. The ODI World Cup was previously held by India in 2011, however, it was a shared hosting tournament with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The Indian Cricket Team has won two ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cups in its existence.
The first ICC Men’s ODI World Cup was won by India in 1983 under the renowned captaincy of Kapil Dev, while the second ICC Men’s ODI World Cup was eventually won by India in 2011 under the captaincy of former India captain MS Dhoni.
ICC Men’s ODI World Cup History:
The first three editions of the ICC Cricket World Cup were held in England in 1975. The first edition featured eight teams, and the West Indies won by defeating Australia in the final. The Caribbean team also won the second edition before being defeated in the third edition final by India.
In 1987, India and Pakistan co-hosted the World Cup for the first time outside of England’s boundaries. The number of overs per inning was reduced from 60 to 50 during that edition, which was one of the key adjustments. Australia won the championship by defeating longtime rivals England in the final.
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup was held in Australia and New Zealand in 1992, introducing in colourful jerseys and day-night matches. Pakistan came triumphant, while England was defeated once more. Four years later, in 1996, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka co-hosted the World Cup.
After India and Pakistan, Sri Lanka became the third Asian team to win the World Cup. In the final in Lahore, they defeated Australia. From 1999 to 2007, Australia dominated one-day internationals and won three World Cups in a row. India stopped Australia from winning the championship for the fourth time in a row in 2011. India also became the first country to win the World Cup on its home grounds.
However, four years later, Australia recovered the ODI World Cup by winning it on home soil. And, in the most recent edition of the ICC Men’s World Cup, England finally ended their lengthy quest for an ODI World Cup title. They defeated New Zealand in the final.
Australia has won the World Cup five times, making them the most successful side in the tournament’s history. The only other teams that have won the tournament more than once are the West Indies (2) and India (2). Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England have all won it once.
